About Pigmentation Treatment
Pigmentation simply means colouring.
Your skin gets its colour from a pigment called melanin and skin pigmentation disorders affect the colour of your skin. Special cells in the skin (melanocytes) make melanin. When these cells become damaged or unhealthy, it affects melanin production. This can result in either hypo-pigmentation (loss of pigment) or hyper-pigmentation (over production of pigment).
Common causes of pigmentation
Most common pigmented lesions are:
- freckles
- age spots
- liver spots
- actinic keratosis
- pigmented nevi
Melasma and chloasma are other forms of hormonally caused pigmentation.
They normally contain very high concentrations of melanin (pigment) and can be caused by too much sun, aging, genetics or even injury.
