What is pigmentation?

skin-pigmentationPigmentation simply means colouring.

Your skin gets its colour from a pigment called melanin and skin pigmentation disorders affect the colour of your skin. Special cells in the skin (melanocytes) make melanin. When these cells become damaged or unhealthy, it affects melanin production.  This can result in either hypo-pigmentation (loss of pigment) or hyper-pigmentation (over production of pigment)

Most common pigmented lesions are freckles, age spots, liver spots, actinic keratosis and pigmented nevi. Melasma and chloasma are other forms of hormonally caused pigmentation.

They normally contain very high concentrations of melanin (pigment) and can be caused by too much sun, aging, genetics or even injury.

How does the pigmentation treatment work?

The green light from the Dual Yellow laser targets the melanin only, leaving surrounding tissue undamaged.

You will see immediate change and in some cases the pigmented spot will darken slightly, which is perfectly normal. This lasts 10 -14 days before dropping off. This method causes no damages to surrounding tissue and you

Avoid invasive procedures such as surgical removal or freezing.
