The Cancer Council’s new website iheard.com.au is an information rich website that answers many common questions about what causes cancer – you can even ask your own questions on the site.
Can laser hair removal cause cancer?
There is no evidence that laser hair removal is cancer causing, although iheard.com.au suggests
Caution in the use of cosmetic laser therapy for people with a personal or family history of skin cancer or atypical moles, until further research determines whether these changes may be malignant or not.
- does not use the same wavelength as UV radiation from sunlight which is known to damage cell DNA and cause skin cancers
- is not ionising radiation like nuclear radiation or XRays which are known to cause cancers
Long-term effects of laser therapy, including the possibility of an increased risk of cancer, have not been studied.
